The future of events at Dunedin’s Forsyth Barr Stadium is looking brighter, as proposals for better lighting are pitched.

A contract is to be awarded next year to design and construct new LED floodlighting to cater for high-definition evening sports broadcasting and crowd entertainment.

The lighting control system would provide the ability to switch each floodlight on and off rapidly, and vary their intensity, enabling the creation of light shows.

An upgrade is expected to be completed by the end of next year.

Dunedin Venues Management Ltd (DVML) invited requests for proposals this month and a supplier could be selected about February.

DVML chief executive Terry Davies said the lighting would be more efficient, and improved control systems could enhance the event experience at the stadium.

Tender documents highlighted the potential for broadcasters to use light shows in their television productions, but the primary objective would be to entertain stadium spectators.

Mr Davies said replacement of lighting had been signalled in asset planning, and it would follow an upgrade of changing rooms and installation of new replay screens.
