A high-speed motorbike donated to a Dunedin fire brigade in gratitude for its heroic efforts saving a trapped horse has sold for $6250.

A couple of weeks ago, Portobello farmer Miles Notman gave his local volunteer fire brigade a Ducati to auction off after they rescued stricken retired racehorse Cullen Star on his property on Good Friday this year.

After 72 bids the Monster Ducati’s reserve was met at just over $6000.

Portobello Fire Brigade Station Officer Bill Dickson said it was a fair price for a nice bike.

"The brigade will be absolutely stoked with the money.

"To get $6250 from anybody, that’s huge."

He was grateful for Mr Notman’s generosity.

Cullen Star had fallen into a sheep dip at Mr Notman’s property and it was SO Dickson’s idea to fill the trench with water so the horse could escape uninjured.

The money from the bike sale will go towards a first-response vehicle and shed for the brigade.

"We need to get something that’s able to do everything. The minute you do that the value for the vehicle goes up," he said.

The brigade will hold its annual quiz night in the Portobello Coronation Hall at the end of this month and the funds raised will also go towards the first-response vehicle.
