Police have confirmed the "exam office'' at the University of Otago was broken into at the weekend.
Senior Sergeant Ian Temple, of Dunedin, said today that the registry office, which holds exam papers, had been entered on Saturday night.
The office, also known as the Clock Tower building, could only be entered using swipe-card access, Snr Sgt Temple said.
However, he did not know what damage, if any, had been done or whether anything was taken.
Campus Watch has secured the scene.
A spoleswoman for the Otago University Students' Association said the last exams were completed by students on Saturday morning.
She said she had no idea how anyone would have been able to get into the building, as the whole campus was "pretty secure''.
Inquiries were continuing.
