Boy (14) leads Dunedin police on chase in stolen car

A 14-year-old boy will appear in court today after stealing a car and fleeing from police yesterday.

Dunedin's acting senior sergeant Ben Butterfield said police chased a fleeing driver yesterday for about 3km.

"Then we decided to abandon the pursuit. We located the vehicle dumped a short time later.

"Police dog handlers tracked two offenders who were subsequently arrested.''

One boy, 14, will face charges of stealing a car, unlawfully taking a car, failing to stop for police and dangerous driving in court today, he said.

His 13 year-old companion has been placed in Child Youth and Family care and will be referred to youth aid, he said.

Mr Butterfield said the pair didn't have much to say to explain their actions.

"It's no good, but nobody was hurt.''

He said the car caused minor damage along its path.
