Anyone walking into Dunedin's Dal Vivo Salon yesterday would have been forgiven for thinking they had walked on to the set of a horror movie.

Everything from bullet wounds and scars to 1920s glamour make-up was on display at a showcase judging event for the Ali McD Agency advanced make-up school.

Aliana McDaniel said the event was the end of a seven-week course which taught students how to apply make-up for purposes ranging from weddings through to fake wounds.

Hers was the only school in the city which taught students how to apply wound make-up and many of them had already used their skills in movies, she said.

Student Katy Parsons said she had wanted to be a make-up artist for 14 years as she loved fashion, which influenced her three models' looks for the event.

It took her a few hours to get their hair, make-up and clothing ready for judging by a panel including University of Otago music lecturer Ian Chapman alter-ego performer Dr Glam, Nom*D designer Margi Robertson and Christian Fairhurst, of Revlon.
