Emergency services attend a crash in which a car landed on its side in Otago Harbour at low tide yesterday morning.

The driver of the car lost control on black ice at the intersection of Bacon St and Portobello Rd. A 51-year-old woman was taken to hospital with a suspected neck injury.

The 8.40am crash prompted police to remind drivers to drive carefully on Portobello Rd, which had many sheltered bays and corners susceptible to black ice.

If there was any visible sign of frost, as a precaution motorists should drive as if there was black ice, Senior Constable Lox Kellas, of Portobello, said.

A winter driving operation, "Operation Frosty", will start in earnest on Monday. Constable Anthony Bond said for two weeks police would be targeting motorists not driving to the conditions, or with limited visibility.

People caught driving with an iced-over windsecreen or otherwise unclear field of vision, could get a $150 ticket or, in the more serious cases, end up in court, he said.
