About 850 people turned out on Saturday for the organisation's annual Op Shop Fabric Sale at Burns Hall, in First Church, Presbyterian Support retail manager Chrissy Anderson said.
The sale - which has been running for more than a decade - offered keen knitters and costume-makers the chance to snap up an assortment of cheap fabric, wool, patterns and other items, she said.
And, after months of preparation and a four-hour set-up on Friday, the hordes descended on Saturday for a three-hour fabric feeding frenzy, she said.
''It's an iconic event and people come from all over New Zealand for it,'' she said.
The sales together raised about $15,000, which would help fund Presbyterian Support's family support programmes across Otago, she said.
''All of our profit that we make for retail goes to fund those services... so the more money we make the more services Presbyterian Support can provide.''
Among the shoppers were sisters Grace (8) and Alice (6) Johnston, of Dunedin, who were busy fossicking through piles of fabric in search of the perfect buy.
Grace said she needed material to make a tuatara and tui for a Kiwiana fabric and fibre project at Columba College.
Ms Anderson said another buyer with a connection to Scouts New Zealand spent $1000 buying fabric for a Dunedin group, and schools were also keen to snap up fabric for their pupils to use.
Other shoppers ranged from Dunedin designers in search of materials to ''people who just love knitting a home-made jersey''.
