Duncan Trickey, the teacher in charge of business studies at Otago Girls’ High School was named National Young Enterprise Trust Teacher of the Year.
Mr Trickey’s "entire family" are teachers and he said he now had something to brag about to them.
He found out about his victory at the Otago Young Enterprise Scheme regional final last week after being nominated by some of the students he taught.
"It means a hell of a lot for me to be up there and representing the school.
"It’s an honour and there’s some incredible teachers who’ve got it before me."
He will fly to Wellington in December to attend the National Young Enterprise Scheme awards at the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa.
He will speak at the event and had already been given tips on how to prepare by his pupils, he said.
"I’ll have to make sure I’m living up to our [classes’] high expectations for public speaking."
He was grateful for the opportunity and the recognition.
"It’s such an exciting programme that really pushes [students] out of their comfort zones. It just shows them how they do have a future in business."
It would be beneficial for him as he could develop more connections in the business world and gain inspiration.
He had taught at Otago Girls’ High School since 2018 and became head of business studies in 2022.
