The allure of quick cash from an automatic teller machine was too tempting for one would-be thief who yesterday tried to steal a Dunedin ATM by pulling it from a shop wall using a strop attached to his car.

A witness told police a man driving a grey Ford Fairlane appeared to try to steal the Mailer St ANZ ATM about 5.45am.

When officers arrived, there was no sign of the man, only the slightly battered ATM chirping away in the corner.

No money was taken from the ATM.

The attempt to make off with the large, heavy machine was unusual in the Southern police district, Senior Sergeant Steve Aitken, of Dunedin, said.

Sen Sgt Aitken said a 41-year-old man was later located at a Kaikorai Valley Rd address and charged with burglary.
