A pair of buildings that once housed Dunedin clubs are being demolished because of the presence of asbestos.

Dunedin City Council group manager parks and recreation Scott MacLean said the former Tainui scouts building and the Tainui Croquet Club building — which also housed the Tainui Bowling Club — in Tahuna Rd were being demolished because of the presence of asbestos.

The work was expected to take up to five weeks and the future of the site was still being discussed, Mr MacLean said.

Tainui Croquet Club president Pam Bardsley said the building used to belong to the Tainui Sports Society, but was bought by the council after the society disbanded in 2018.

The croquet club was still going strong and still leased a clubroom on the grounds.

The demolition of the building was not sad for the club members as they said goodbye to it in 2018, she said.

The club was being consulted on plans for the site once the demolition was complete, she said.
