Armistice Day is the anniversary of the symbolic end of World War 1 on November 11, 1918.

It commemorates the armistice signed between the Allies and Germany for the cessation of hostilities on the Western Front, which took effect at 11am, the "eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month".

In Dunedin, a service will begin at the cenotaph in Queens Gardens at 10.45am.

At 11am, on the 11th chime of the town hall clock, the Robbie Burns cannon will fire a single salute across the Octagon to commemorate the day.
