An investigation is under way after an arborist was injured by a falling branch while working at a Dunedin golf club yesterday.

The man was taken to Dunedin Hospital with moderate injuries after he was hit in the face while working up a tree on the first hole on Chisholm Links in Tahuna.

Crews from the Dunedin Fire Station and St John attended the incident which occurred just after 10am yesterday.

Despite his injuries, the man was able to climb down from the tree on his own.

Dunedin Station Officer Mike Johnston said the arborist had been hit in the face and was still in the tree - and conscious - when firefighters arrived.

A specialist climbing team was being prepared and climbing rescue gear was being rigged up when the man climbed down from the tree, Mr Johnston said.

Chisholm Links manager Wilson James said he could not comment about the incident as it would be investigated by the club.

''We will carry out our own investigation to find out exactly what happened leading up to the incident so, hopefully, it never happens again.''

While he was still in shock yesterday and recovering from his injuries, the man was doing well considering the circumstances, Mr James said.

He was an experienced arborist who had worked for the club many times before.

A WorkSafe spokeswoman said they had been notified of the incident and would be making inquiries to determine what steps would be taken next.

The arborist was treated by St John staff at the scene before leaving in an ambulance about 11am.

A St John spokesman said the man was taken to Dunedin Hospital with moderate injuries.
