Maori musicians prepared to perform at the global launch of a new Dunedin-made app - Showband Mix-O-Matic - created by Louise Kewene-Doig.

Ms Kewene-Doig said the information app was the first of its kind. It provides a history of Maori show bands and their music, and allows users to create music in the style of Maori show bands.

Inspiration for the app came from her late father, Hekemaru Kewene, who was a member of The Maori Castaways show band, which travelled the world.

The Showband Mix-O-Matic app will be launched at Allen Hall Theatre this Saturday as part of a theatre performance titled "It's a Maori Melody''.

Music in the performance will be by songwriters from the 1960s Maori show band era.
