New rules governing animals kept at residential homes in Dunedin have been approved by the Dunedin City Council.
Councillors at yesterday's full council meeting voted to adopt the Keeping of Animals (Excluding Dogs) and Birds Bylaw, following consultation and last month's public hearing.
The rules applied to all residential properties, and would allow council staff to take action to remove any nuisance - such as excessive noise - or health risks caused by animals, if complaints were received.
Among the rules was one requiring residential property owners keeping animals in small pens to collect manure, and either store it in fly-proof receptacles or bury it under 50mm of soil.
The wording had been changed to stress pens, rather than enclosures, and applied only to residential properties, rather than also including rural residential, following an outcry from some landowners earlier this year.
