"Yay! It's holiday time now."

Otago Girls High School pupil Sarah Walker was jumping with excitement yesterday, with fellow dance pupils, after her final NCEA exam - level 1 dance theory.

She was one of 6335 Otago pupils who sat NCEA exams this year and for many, yesterday was the last day.

However, today is officially the final day for a small number of pupils taking NCEA Chinese, health and Latin at levels 1, 2 and 3.

Otago candidates were among more than 139,000 senior secondary school pupils nationwide sitting NCEA exams this year, filling out nearly 1.9 million answer booklets in about 120 exam sessions.

Now the waiting begins.

The New Zealand Qualifications Authority plans to send NCEA results to candidates by mid January and New Zealand Scholarship results in mid February.

Marked NCEA exam papers will be returned to candidates from the end of January.

For the time being, it is the holidays.
