The Spirit of Adventure Trust takes young people on journeys to aid personal growth and development.

Trust chief executive Dean Lawrence said the 80 new shipmates yesterday were assisted by 16 crew in tasks including lowering and adjusting the large mainsails and setting the jibs.

They sailed from the Fryatt St wharves out to Port Chalmers and back.

The weather yesterday was good for sailing, he said.

The vessel would sail up the coast to Nelson next.
