Allied Press, publisher of the Otago Daily Times, was presented with two gold medals for the ODT Extra! tabloid at the Pride in Print awards last month.
Another newspaper printed by Allied Press, The Western Star, was highly commended.
Extra! has a print run of 5500 copies, which takes about 21 minutes and uses 7km of paper.
At full efficiency, more than 10 copies can be printed per second.
The printing press works by applying four separate layers of colour - cyan, magenta, yellow and black - to the pages.
These colours blend to create a full colour image.
Awards manager Ruth Cobb said judges paid attention to every little detail of the entries, from the quality of the colours to the accuracy of the print.
The judging standards increased as the industry developed.
The quality of a gold medal newspaper printed five years ago would not meet the criteria today, she said.
There were 32 entries in the newspaper category, of which 11 won a gold medal.
Allied Press was the only gold medal winner in the South Island.
Seven companies entered the category.
