Dunedin youth are being encouraged to demonstrate their talent and creativity through various events organised by the Dunedin City Council's Youth Action committee this week.

Youth Week 2013 had the theme of Live Like A Legend and was launched in the Octagon on Saturday.

Committee chairman LJ Apaipo said it was important for young people to be able to express their individuality and skill, as well as celebrate those traits in others.

Live music entertained dozens of people at the launch, where young DJs performed alongside more seasoned musicians.

Throughout the week, drummer Dylan Elise will visit Dunedin schools, where he will perform and teach budding percussionists before a competition at Sammy's on Friday night.

He will also host a drumming clinic on Saturday at Music Works, in Stuart St.

Youth Week included a skate event at Forsyth Barr Stadium organised by the Dunedin Bike Board and Blake Trust, as well as various challenges run through the Kokiri Training Centre.

More information was available on the committee's website www.yac.org.nz.
