Long-distance runner Glenn Sutton and his support crew will leave the Esplanade at St Clair at 9am today and drive about 420km to Haast Beach.
The 43-year-old joiner will run back to the Esplanade from about 6am tomorrow for no other reason than a need for ''adventure''.
''I've never gone that far before. It's a personal challenge.''
Bruce Adams would support Mr Sutton on the run, as he had at other runs, including the Badwater 135 foot race in California in 2014 and 2015 and the Alps 2 Ocean cycle trail last year.
Mr Sutton ''went into some pretty painful and terrible places'', Mr Adams said laughing.
Mr Sutton said the 300km cycle trail was the longest distance he had run.
''I took 46 hours - I felt every bit of it, I was knackered ... but you dig yourself out of a hole and keep going - that's what it's all about.''
The races were ''not enjoyable all the way''.
''There will be anger and tears and all the emotions. There will be bleeding, chaffing and blisters - the full package - but pain's temporary, memories are forever.''
The support crew would pace him for sections of the run this weekend but they should not expect too much banter on the road.
''I shut off from everyone,'' Mr Sutton said.
He was expecting to reach the Esplanade on Monday morning, but the only goal he had set was to finish.
''I've talked about it so it would be nice to pull it off but I'm anxious about it because it's quite a long way.''
