An expansion to Aurora Energy's pole reinforcement programme in Central Otago will not be extended to Dunedin.

Aurora Energy chairman Steve Thompson announced on Thursday an extra 100 power poles would be reinforced with pole-nails in Alexandra this month as a direct response to the failure of three poles since August.

An additional 360 would be nailed in Cromwell, Clyde and Roxburgh in January as a precaution.

However, an Aurora Energy spokesman said there would be no expansion of the lines company's pole reinforcement in Dunedin beyond what was already planned.

Climate, soil types and pole construction methods differed between inland and coastal parts of the Aurora's network, the spokesman said.

The lines company's planned pole programme was ongoing and included both pole replacement and reinforcement in Dunedin, he said.

Since November last year, Auroa has been replacing, reinforcing and repairing its condition one and condition zero power poles as part of its fast-track pole replacement programme.
