Dunedin city councillor Bill Acklin has been fined $1000 and disqualified from driving for nine months for his second drink-drive offence.

Charged with driving with a breath-alcohol level of 508mcg, on Main South Rd on May 19, William Robert Acklin (48), entertainer, pleaded guilty in the Dunedin District Court yesterday.

Prosecutor Sergeant Graeme Evans said Acklin was driving a friend's vehicle at Green Island, about 11pm.

Found to have an excess breath-alcohol level when tested at a random stop, Acklin said he had had three wines and an RTD.

Representing himself, Acklin told Judge Stephen Coyle he had been in similar situation five years ago and had no excuse.

He made a conscious decision to drive and had felt capable of driving safely.

"I deeply regret this," he said. "I have let down my children, parents and a lot of other people in the community."

Judge Coyle said the incident had brought home to Acklin again "alcohol impairs your judgement. With a level of that amount, you should have known you should not have been driving".

The judge accepted Acklin was genuinely remorseful and clearly understood the consequences of drinking and driving.

Acklin must also to pay $132.89 court costs.
