80 tickets in 7-hour city blitz

Dunedin police are disappointed after issuing 80 infringement notices in seven hours yesterday during a campaign to cut speed in the city's residential areas.

Tactical co-ordinator Acting Senior Sergeant Chris McLellan, of Dunedin, said 20 officers were positioned on streets in Kaikorai Valley, South Dunedin and between Green Island and Waldronville, as part of Operation Speed.

The highest speed recorded was 75kmh in a 50kmh zone in Kaikorai Valley Rd, he said.

Ten of the vehicles stopped were also issued infringement notices for having expired warrants of fitness or registration, and six vehicles were stopped because one, or all, of the occupants were not wearing seat belts.

"Eighty infringements in seven hours. That is a high figure - there's no disputing that.

"We are conscious that figure is getting up there. It's disappointing to issue that many infringements."

Acting Snr Sgt McLellan said the campaign was aimed at reminding drivers to be conscious of their speed and to get to their destination safely.

"It's important at this time of year, with lots of Christmas shopping foot traffic and children starting their school holiday break."
