$700,000 bill for roads in Dunedin

The estimated cost of fixing the damage to Dunedin's roads from last month's coastal flooding has nearly doubled and the damage to Otago's highways is estimated to be about $300,000.

Early estimates for Dunedin's roads were that the damage would cost $400,000, but as the extent of the damage became more apparent and final quotes came in, the costs had risen to about $700,000, Dunedin City Council programme engineer Mike Harrison said.

"It was across the whole city, really, and we're very busy, trying to fix everything as quickly as possible."

The largest costs were for slips along Otago Peninsula.

There was also damage to road pavements and gravel surfaces.

There had also been scouring along the shoulder of Three Mile Hill Rd, which was an "expensive" problem to fix, he said.

New Zealand Transport Agency region network manager Otago-Southland, Murray Clarke, said the damage was mainly to State Highway 1 and, to a lesser extent, State Highway 83, in the Waitaki Valley.

Remedial work was needed to remove a build-up of gravel at some bridges along the highways, mostly at Big Kuri Creek, just north of Hampden, he said.

"There is a lot of material to remove from under the bridge."
