Peter Kernahan reckons he has met some lunatics in his time but his brother Dave, known for his daily run up and down the world's steepest street, beats them all.

Dave Kernahan celebrated his 60th birthday on Saturday with 60 legs of the steepest section of Baldwin St - 30 up and 30 down - taking about an hour.

Watching were his brother, who lives in England, his Auckland-based daughter Rachelle Silby and her husband Andrew.

They took a slower approach to ascending the north Dunedin street - walking - and when they stopped for a breather shook their heads as Mr Kernahan ran past and headed back down skipping.

"I don't know how he does it," Mrs Silby said as she got her breath back.

Mr Kernahan, who had been running up the street for 15 years, said as he had taken a few days off to spend time with his brother, he had to make up for it on Saturday.

"I get a bit toey if I haven't done it for a few days. I feel guilty," he said while taking a breath at the top of the street.

He had been planning 100 trips but decided as he had a "full-on" day with family arriving from around New Zealand and England to celebrate his birthday, he would just do 60.

"It's a special time. The family is more important than doing this."
