Dunedin's playgrounds are nearly halfway through a million-dollar upgrade but it's too early to say if the city will be getting a new jungle-gym.

Surfaces and equipment at 52 of the city's playgrounds are being upgraded as part of a $1million Dunedin City Council project.

Most of the work is focused on renewing soft-fall safety surfaces but some playgrounds will also have new equipment installed, such as the eight-metre tunnel slide at Mulford Park, in Concord.

Council parks and recreation manager Robert West said about 40% of the project had been completed so far and the council hoped to finish the upgrades by March next year.

In its 10-year-plan the council has budgeted $6.6million for investing in play spaces.

The council was also reviewing its play spaces strategic plan.

When asked if the council was considering a new playground in the city, Mr West said it was "too early to say".
