Queenstown police have located the Nepalese hiker who had not been seen since yesterday morning.

The 25-year-old was slightly hypothermic and very hungry, but uninjured and in good spirits, when he was found about 2pm today, police said.

“We would like to extend a huge thank you to all volunteers who assisted in the search and ultimately brought the hiker to safety,'' Constable Pepper Ruston said.

“Volunteer teams included search and rescue dogs, Alpine Cliff Rescue, and Sub Alpine Search and Rescue teams, who gave up their time today to assist a very appreciative hiker."

Sanjeev was dropped off at the start of Wye Creek track on State Highway 6 (Kingston Road) about 8.15am.

He was planning to walk the track to the Remarkables skifield and was expected to arrive about 8pm yesterday, police said in a statement.

When he did not arrive as expected, his friends reported him missing.
