Rumours are rife about who South Dunedin’s newest millionaire is, as the winning Lotto ticket holder remains at large.

The $1 million ticket was sold at the South Dunedin Night ’n Day for the July 22 draw, but the prize remains unclaimed.

Social media posts have been name-dropping and one person even surmised the winner would be the only person driving around South Dunedin with "a full tank of gas".

Store owner Murray Devereux said it was likely the winner was from South Dunedin because the overwhelming majority of his customers lived in the area.

It was unusual the prize had not been claimed yet, because most winners tended to front up within a week, he said.

"Sometimes it does take time for people to process what they’ve won.

"The last one we had won about $13m on Powerball and it took them well over a week to come forward.

"I think the longest anyone has waited is about 12 months."

The store was generally pretty lucky with first division Lotto wins, he said.

"In 2016, we were New Zealand’s luckiest Lotto store.

"It’s a nice feeling for everyone — even the locals. It’s nice for them to know we’re still selling big tickets."

The ticket holder is one of two new millionaires in the city.

A Mosgiel resident was left "speechless" after scooping $1m on an Instant Kiwi scratchie, bought from the Monte Carlo Milk Bar last weekend.

The man, who declined to be named, said the scratchie had been sitting in his truck for a day or two before he scratched it.

"It was a strange feeling when I scratched the winning number.

"I was excited but also speechless.

"I tried to carry on like normal for the rest of the day and had a couple of beers that night to celebrate," the man said.

He was taking some time to work out his next steps, he said.

"I’m going to stick with my job and not rush into anything.

"But looking after my family and buying some property is high on my list.

"It’s only a good thing if you do good things with it, after all."
