The Outram Glen Track will remain closed for much of this month after being damaged during the deluge which battered much of eastern Otago and inundated parts of the Taieri last month.
The 6km Department of Conservation-managed track will require about $15,000 of repair work after it was damaged and trees fell on it in high winds.
"We are looking to clear the windfall trees by the end of this month so people can start using the track again,'' Doc Coastal Otago operations manager Annie Wallace said.
"Further track repair work will need to be done and this is being planned, along with repairs to other tracks that need doing following the weather event.
"The estimated cost for repairing Outram Glen Track is $15,000.''
The track was damaged during the deluge on July 21 and 22, in which more than 100mm of rain fell on many areas of the Taieri.
The track was closed on July 24 and the decision was reviewed last Thursday.
"The plan is to restore the track in its current location as much as possible, with only minor changes to the route,'' Ms Wallace said.
"To relocate the track to higher ground would involve significant additional cost and also introduce a hill climb.
"Doc manages a number of tracks around Dunedin City that have sustained varying degrees of damage from the July storm.''
"We are working to repair the tracks as soon as we can.
"We ask that people check the Doc website for information about track status and take caution when using tracks that have been damaged until more permanent repairs have been completed.''
