The lower Octagon was a sea of children and tiny instruments this week as 1100 Otago school pupils from 42 schools exhibited their ukulele skills.

Many children and crowd members hoped Ed Sheeran might make an appearance at the "Ed-uke-ate" event, but it was not to be.

Co-organiser Rach McNamara said that was fine because "the kids are the event, not Ed".

The children were brilliantly behaved and so were their parents, she said.

"Standing on this stage it was amazing - the tuneful cheeriness that they had."

She was stoked with the turnout.

"It was a huge effort to organise. There were a lot of meetings."

St Leonards School pupil Haika Palmer (9) said his school practised about 10 times to get their tone just right.

His favourite Sheeran song was "the fire" one (I See Fire).

"I’m not sure what the name was. The Hobbit one."

Mornington School pupil Sophie Moors (9) said she was hoping

Sheeran would jump on stage.

"We were just playing the best. I thought we sounded great."
