The eyes on the school bus went back and forth for weeks before young Brian Cashmere and Val Ross officially became a couple.

Brian (now 86) was always the last to get on the bus to Mosgiel District High School and Val (now 84) would admire him as he walked up the aisle.

And visa versa. He would check out the bus to see where she was sitting each day.

"She always caught my attention because she was very sporty," Mr Cashmere said.

"I was sporty, too, and she was probably the only one who could keep up with me.

"She’s a wee sweetie."

Mrs Cashmere said she was a good hockey player and Mr Cashmere was a good runner.

The couple were among a group of friends at school who regularly went to bible classes together in the evenings, and their friendship eventually grew to something more serious when Mr Cashmere started taking her home from the classes in his old Ford Prefect.

"It wouldn’t go much faster than 50mph (80kmh), so it was a slow bumpy ride home on the gravel roads.

"We would go to the town hall dance every Saturday night and I’d always be busy making a new dress to wear."

As for their first kiss, Mrs Cashmere said she could not comment.

"It was too long ago to remember.

"There’s been a lot of kisses in between now and then."

The Taieri couple were married on November 1, 1958 and spent much of their lives as dairy farmers at Momona, during which time they had four children, followed by 11 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.

Yesterday, the couple celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary with a "lunch date".

They were ecstatic to have reached the milestone and believed the secret to their marital success was being good friends, being good team-mates while working on the farm, and sharing their passions.

"We shared sport together," she said.

"We walk our dog together, and we share the gardening. We’ve got quite a big garden.

"Our family — our kids — have also been wonderful. They’ve brought us together and kept us together."
