Literary scholarship offered

The University of Otago launched a  City of Literature scholarship yesterday.

The university and Dunedin City Council announced the launch of a doctoral scholarship in literary studies.

University Department of English and Linguistics head Shef Rogers said the "University of Otago City of Literature PhD Scholarship" would be offered annually to a research student to study at the university.The recipient would get $25,000 tax free, and their tuition fee paid for, annually for three years, Dr Rogers said.

"It was developed to establish a tangible recognition of Dunedin’s special City of Literature status for the benefit of postgraduate students."

Graduates in any discipline intending to undertake research at PhD level on a topic relating to literature were eligible to apply, Dr Rogers said. City of Literature director Nicky Page said the scholarship celebrated Dunedin’s City of Literature status and acknowledged its rich literary past and present.

Applications for this year’s scholarship close on March 31.
