Flood protection works on the Water of Leith through the University of Otago campus are due to start in November.
The Otago Regional Council has refined the form of flood mitigation works to the reach of the stream between the Leith St footbridge and Forth St during the past few years.
Environmental engineering and hazards director Gavin Palmer said the focus of the work was ensuring flood flow delivery was achieved in a cost-effective way and in a manner consistent with the university's campus master plan.
Council staff and the university's property services had been discussing the proposed works, which included enlarging the channel of the Leith so it could carry more water in a flood.
It would involve cutting away most of the north side of the concrete channel that ran through the campus, but more detailed design was still being finalised, he said.
