ODT illustrations editor Stephen Jaquiery reflects on his year behind the lens.
So often in my career I thought I have captured the shot only to review my images and find it was not timed dead right or not in focus. Not this time.
I must have replayed the image 100 times to make sure before I downloaded it at the office.
Bullfighter Claude Armstrong got over his black eye and the bull, On Ice, probably enjoyed the connection.
I love a snowy day in the city and the challenge of capturing excited children. Hazel Fulton, 2, with her dad Cameron Fulton were perfect subjects.
A lot of nothing. Thick fog blots out all but the slide in Lake Waihola.
I left home at 6.30am to photograph an unseasonal overnight snowfall before it melted. This early start had me at the scene of an arson where an abandoned boarding house was fully engulfed in flame. I abandoned the snowfall.
On assignment to photograph sheep being driven up the road near Lee Stream I happened upon a young falcon passing the day on a disused electric fencepost. It was yet to have the "be wary of humans" lesson, allowing me to get quite close.
Gale force winds whipped Otago Harbour into a frenzy, and cars crossing the causeway got an unwanted saltwater wash. I sheltered the best I could behind a power pole as I photographed the mayhem.
The picture is quite nice; the story is beautiful. Josh Rudd asked the council to build a roundabout which he designed for his wheelchair-bound best friend Scarlette Ryder at their local playground. The Dunedin City Council responded by installing an imported alternative, which is enjoyed by the pair.
It was lovely to send my home-town hero off with a fitting image. Prue, Lady Wallis, watches with twin grand-daughters Katrina and Genevieve as the RNZAF Texans streak over Sir Tim Wallis’ funeral ceremony. The casket with Sir Tim rests in his favourite helicopter, while actress Rima Te Wiata sings a waiata.
A shaft of sunlight on a grey morning brings this image of the Otematata sheep drive up State Highway 83 to life.
