New Zealand Fire Service Otago-Southland manager David Guard hopes people will behave responsibly and safely when using fireworks.

What smell do you find irresistible?

There are two irresistible smells that go hand in hand. They are the smell of the beach and the smell of a canvas tent. They act like a switch that turns off all the normal stresses of life and gives the go-ahead to chill right out (made even better with a good craft beer in hand).

What is your least favourite thing about humanity?

The way children are abused and manipulated in an increasingly hostile adult world.

What is one strong childhood memory?

A very good friend's parents were big into motor racing. So, I was lucky to be included in many weekends chasing car racing, motocross and stock cars.  This led on to me racing motocross for many years.

What is your message?

Determine what makes you happy, what you are good at, and chase it relentlessly your whole life.

If you were going to an island and could only take three things, what would they be and why?

My island is somewhere in the Pacific and my list would include snorkelling gear, my guitar and my wonderful partner.  The snorkelling gear is for harvesting and passing the time away, and my guitar and partner feed my soul.
