The Electricity Commission teamed up with Consumer NZ, the Energy Efficiency Conservation Authority, Master Electricians and the Green Building Council to launch it.
According to commission chairman David Caygill: "If we all used efficient lighting, New Zealand could reduce its annual energy consumption by as much as 1200GWh.
That's equivalent to the total electricity use in Waitakere and North Shore cities for a year, or over $278 million per year in residential power bills".
At the rightlight.govt.nz website there is an easy sliding-scale calculator to work out what changing to fluorescents will save you.
A small house, for example, can expect to save the price of 42 loaves of bread, or about $126 a year.
But the website is not all about screwing the last penny out of your lighting budget.
It also sheds a great deal of, well, light on other issues to do with illumination.
The website houses a "virtual designer" and has consumer and lighting design tips.
But a fair bit of the emphasis is on going easy on electricity.
"When we use energy-efficient lighting, we help create a better New Zealand," the website says.
"Join the rest of New Zealand in reducing the home lighting load by 66% (a feat that's definitely achievable)."
