To minimise the risk and stress involved in the investment of design and construction, regular open communication and active client participation is key. Developments in technology are utilised for both the production and communication of building ideas offering the seamless communication of 3D information at all stages of the process. This is not only a benefit to clients who may be from out of town, but also to builders, subcontractors, consultants and suppliers.
With over 25 years' experience, Chris Norman has successfully completed a range of innovative design projects in New Zealand, the UK and Canada. This national and international experience in a variety of building types gives his local and international clients confidence in building with technologies that are locally achievable as well as foresight into emerging technologies and knowledge that have been commonplace overseas for some time
Since shifting to Wanaka in 2003 Chris has established a network of reliable suppliers and builders, an up to date knowledge of local government regulations and a good understanding of building design and materials that complement the local climate and unique landscape.
Recent buildings and alterations take into account the hot dry summers with control against the suns movement while maintaining views. In the long cold winters access to the sun for solar gain and wellbeing is important. Also featured is the connection to a variety of outdoor spaces that allow activities at different times of the day with shelter from predominant Northwest winds.
The processes and materials used are environmentally and socially sensitive with embodied energy considered against durability and the energy consumption over the lifetime of the building.
Energy consumption and investment in heat sources are reduced by the use of energy efficient fittings & appliances, high performance insulation, thermally advanced windows and airtightness. Heat sources include air tube ‘ground to air' heat exchangers coupled with heat recovery ‘air to air' ventilation systems. Geothermal ‘ground to water' heat exchangers provide domestic hot water and underfloor heating. Thermal mass has been used to regulate temperature spikes.
