Some of the world's leading names in garden design are heading to Auckland for the New Zealand Landscape and Garden Design Conference, being held at Waipuna Conference Centre, Mt Wellington, in September.

Registrations are now being taken from private garden enthusiasts for the conference.

The line-up includes: Rosemary Alexander (UK), Marta Montero (South America), Nancy Power (United States), Josh Byrne (Australia), Ed Snodgrass (US), Eric Ossart and Arnaud Maurières (Europe).

Two New Zealand designers will also take the stage: Barb Garrett, a top garden designer, and Renee Davies, head of the NZ Institute of Landscape Architects.

Conference director Warwick Forge says it has taken almost three years of research to secure the international speakers.

The theme of the 2009 conference is "Designing the Liveable Landscape".

"Increasingly, people are demanding more from their outdoor living spaces and the questions arise, how do we ensure that this is done successfully in ways which maximise liveability but also ensure that gardens are attractive and make ecological sense today?" Mr Forge says.

Bev McConnell, owner of one of New Zealand's best-known private gardens, Ayrlies, at Whitford, says anyone remotely interested in creating a garden should attend the conference.

"Seldom do we have the opportunity to be inspired beyond our dreams."
