Bargain hunters managed to secure high-end fashion at low-end prices as tens of thousands of dollars was raised for the Otepoti Dunedin Whanau Refuge at a pop-up fashion sale.

People crammed into the pop-up stall in George St on Saturday, hoping to purchase clothing from such brands as Paris Georgia, Trelise Cooper, Thing Thing, Flo & Frankie, Annah Stretton and Twenty-Seven Names.

The event was organised by a group of University of Otago law students — up to 15 of them volunteered at the fundraiser.

Volunteer Julia Newman, a fourth-year law student, said it was an inspiring event.

The total funds raised from the sale were "at least $23,000", she said.

"The community feel was great. It’s something everyone can go out to."

The initiative has run for several years. Last year’s appeal raised money for a new safe house for Otepoti Dunedin Whanau Refuge.

"It’s important we do work such as this. It broadens our horizons", Ms Newman said.

"You get exposed to a whole other aspect of the community doing work such as this."

Several shoppers managed to secure items at drastically reduced prices. Shopper Tania Keane bought shoes normally valued at $500 for $180, and shirts normally valued at $300 for $40.

"It was pretty overwhelming and crowded here at first, but I’m pleased I got some bargains", she said.

The sale was part of a series of events hosted by students to raise money for Otepoti Dunedin Whanau Refuge. Other events included an auction, a quiz night, a bake sale and a charity gig.
