Get ready for a heartwarming spectacle as Special Rigs for Special Kids gears up to carry a convoy of children for the 30th time on Sunday, August 27.

The streets will echo with the laughter of young ones and the rumble of trucks, while many will gather along the route to enjoy the popular procession.

The event began in 1992 when Andy Willetts, Glen Jacobs and Greg Inch conceived the idea of a way for the local transport industry to provide children with special needs a chance to enjoy a drive in the big rigs.

The day begins at the Edgar Centre at 8.30am.

“We’ve got two lines, one for the drivers and one for the kids, and then they get paired off in what we call the corral.”

“So they don’t know which truck they are getting, and that is part of the mystery for the kids,” Mr Inch said.

The trucks head out on a route through South Dunedin, over Corstorphine to Kaikorai Valley, up Taieri Rd and over Three Mile Hill to Mosgiel, before heading back to Dunedin via Fairfield and Green Island.

The convoy is a highlight for many locals who find their favourite spot to enjoy the trucks roaring past, some getting fish and chips to settle in to watch, while older residents pull out chairs to sit and wave as the convoy goes past.

Once the trucks circle back to the Edgar Centre there is a chance for children, caregivers, and drivers to enjoy food and entertainment together.

For children under 7 a car seat or booster seat is needed to be provided for them, and there is a maximum speed of 40kmh throughout the event.

For three decades, "Special Rigs for Special Kids" has been spreading joy and creating cherished memories for both the participants and the onlookers.

Mr Inch said the connection between the young people and truck drivers was very special.

The event not only raises awareness about young people with special needs but also showcases the spirit of unity within Dunedin's community.

It's a wonderful reminder that kindness, inclusivity, and community spirit continue to thrive in the streets of Dunedin.
