WHILE last Friday was overcast, the rain held off allowing the Stewart Construction Ltd Golf Tournament Fundraiser to be played.

With 35 teams competing at the St Clair Golf Course, the event including a dinner and auction raised an incredible $50,000 for the I Am Hope mental health charity.

I Am Hope is The Key to Life Charitable Trust, an in-school, community, and workplace mental health program. Their aim is to forever change the way the people of Aotearoa think, act, and feel about mental illness and mental wellbeing.

The fundraiser was started by Stewart Construction’s Jodie Peters in 2018, with the support of the company’s managing director David Grant. The issue of mental health, particularly among youth, is close to Jodie’s heart, so an event that married his love of golf with fundraising was perfect.

The golf fundraiser was immediately popular, with teams entered by many of the companies that Stewart Construction Ltd works with. The Dunedin based construction company has operated for 55 years, and employs around 50 people.

Mike King, the comedian and founder of I Am Hope, had heard about last year’s fundraiser. He decided to come to Dunedin especially for the event this year and play golf for the day. Mike spoke at the event after the golf, and was incredibly moving, funny, and powerful.

The $50,000 raised this year was a huge leap from the more than $21,00 that was raised last year. This amazing amount was due to all the sponsors, companies, and individuals who donated, and all the players who make the day fun and rewarding.

A big part of the funds raised this year was from the bathroom package. Jodie had previously looked at the idea, but it had seemed too difficult. So special thanks to Donn Casey from DBC for encouraging the idea this year, and being one of the major donors along with Stewart Construction. Eight other companies also jumped on board to put the bathroom package worth $30,000 up for grabs.

And Jodie wanted to spread this amazing deal further than the golf course, so he listed it on TradeMe for the wider Dunedin community. A lucky bidder won the auction for $22,717, and they’ll be getting their bathroom transformed for a bargain and a great cause.

Next year will be the fifth year for this event, and the team at Stewart’s will endeavour to make it even bigger!
