Wolfe has been generating quite a buzz over the past year or so without releasing much music, but she said recently she can’t wait to be able to finally share what she has been working on.
"It’s really strange to finally be getting to release it," she said.
"The songs have been around for ages ... so many people have asked me about it over the years, so its really nice.
"They are songs that are supposed to be out with the old and in with the new, in a nice way.
"Hideaway and Open Your Eyes are quite old, maybe two years. Home was written for Enterprise Dunedin, and then Take Me Back was written when I got back from the States."
The idea of returning and departing often pops up on the EP with songs tinged with longing, as Wolfe wistfully sings lines wishing herself somewhere else.
"I think I’m a nostalgic person, definitely. How can you not be? If you’ve had good times, you must relive them as much as possible. You got to notice what’s happened, bring it back, then try to lay it to rest after that.
"I feel like I’m a nature-based person in a holistic sense. It’s organic y’know? It’s produced stuff, not just acoustic, but I write songs and I don’t go back and edit them. It’s just what it is."
Working with local producer Tim Greenslade for the EP, Wolfe has pulled together a bunch of talent from the burgeoning Dunedin singer/songwriter scene to help her bring her mostly loop-based compositions to life.
"Jarni Blair plays guitars on all of the songs bar one. Maddie Parkins-Craig, who I wrote Home with, plays on that, and I had Abigail Knudson arrange some stings as well.
"It’s a pleasure just having a group of really talented people come to work on your song."
It’s possible the show will be Wolfe’s last in Dunedin for a while, so head down and experience Open Your Eyes.
SURPRISE APPEARANCE
This is a bit of an odd one as I haven’t seen an official announcement yet, but rumour has it that Christchurch bedcore indie rockers Wurld Series are playing Dunedin next week.
The noise pop foursome released their Anthology on American cassette label Voyager Golden in September, a collection of early recordings comprising a fuzzy tape journey through ’90s songcraft and guitar tones.
They’ll be supported by Peter McCall’s Fazed on A Pony project in its debut as a full live band featuring Richard Ley-Hamilton (Males), Jeremy Clark (Koizilla) and Josh Nicholls (The Violet-Ohs).
NIGHT OF HIP-HOP
Next week Benessere Studios and The Brotherhood Barbershop bring you "The H3RD" for a night of local hip-hop.
A mash up of local MCs, the show will feature Max Dad E, PHX, Rhy Chi, 92, and DJ Forte, resident DJ and host of the Lyrics to Go hip-hop show on 91fm.
