Music review: Unknown Mortal Orchestra

Unknown Mortal Orchestra. Sex & Food. Jagjaguwar. ★★★+

The much-anticipated fourth LP for Ruban Nielson's psych-rock outfit is a genuinely international affair, recorded in Seoul, Hanoi, Reykjavik, Mexico City, Auckland and home base Portland, yet it's cohesive enough that you'd barely notice.

Following 2015's highly acclaimed Multi-Love, the former Mint Chick again explores the lightness and dark of modern times, sounding simultaneously cynical and upbeat on tracks with such self-explanatory titles as Everyone Acts Crazy Nowadays or Ministry of Alienation.

Consistently inventive but without any truly epiphanic peaks (I suspect the songs will come alive in concert), it's still a solid effort.
