This is a ghoulish reworking of Hans Christian Andersen's Tinderbox, and together with David Roberts' disturbing illustrations is a riveting read.

Young Otto Hundebiss (''Dog Bite'') narrates his escape from a family massacre in 17th-century Europe.

Running for his life he resists figures that loom out of the realm of Death: motionless wraiths that utter prophecies, caricatural soldiers with mechanical features, young maidens, plotting aristocrats, and packs of werewolves.

Amid chaos he meets Safire, the young woman of his dreams (and nightmares), and for his own life and her love he must battle against the forces of evil.

This beautifully presented book has graphic violence and adult themes. Ages 12 +.
