Sandy Graham will take up the role after the July 17 departure of chief executive Sue Bidrose, who is leaving to head AgResearch in Christchurch.
The city services general manager has held several senior positions at the council.
The recruitment process to find a permanent replacement for Dr Bidrose is under way and Ms Graham confirmed she would apply.
"I’m committed to what we’re trying to achieve as an organisation," she said.
The appointment of an acting chief executive was confirmed by councillors at this week’s Dunedin City Council meeting.
Parks and recreation group manager Robert West will fill in for Ms Graham and
parks and cemetery manager Scott MacLean will cover for Mr West, also in an acting capacity.

What a surprise. Wonder what the chances of her getting the job? No Nepotism in Dunedin.
This sounds democratic!
I'd like an overpaid cosy council job too - can I have one as well?
Oh god no, please don't be "committed to what we’re trying to achieve as an organisation". Nobody wants this ridiculous rainbows and unicorns dancing in the main street "vision". What the hell is wrong with you people? Have your snouts been in the trough so long that you have lost touch with how much all of us peasants struggle?
Critics off to an early start before she's appointed.
Sandy, don't read us. 🤔
