Drivers in Drivers Rd are unhappy with roadworks taking place in Dunedin.

One lane of the road is closed for a month until March 10 while resealing takes place to repair the damaged surface.

Falkland St resident Errol Sharp said he was unhappy with the way the traffic management had been undertaken.

‘‘Why couldn’t they put a mobile traffic light on timers?

‘‘If they did that they could adjust it to cope with heavy traffic at different times of the day.’’

Mr Sharp said traffic management would not be difficult to put in place but would make a world of difference.

‘‘I caught the bus home yesterday [Tuesday] and we had to go a very tortuous route up and around.’’

Council transport delivery manager Josh Von Pein said the section being resealed was too long with too many side roads to manage traffic with lights or stop/go signs.

‘‘With the high number of vehicles which travel along this road, we consider the best way to manage the traffic is to close one lane and detour traffic.’’

Bus Users Support Group Otepoti Dunedin co-president Alex King said the closure of Drivers Rd was not helping both councils’ efforts to promote bus use.

‘‘The trouble is even with small changes like this, if they inconvenience people it makes the bus service seem more unreliable.

‘‘Things like this frustrate people and they will find other ways to get around.’’

Three bus stops were affected by the change.

AA Otago District Council chairman Malcolm Budd said he had ongoing concerns with council closures of main arterial routes between the suburbs and central Dunedin.

‘‘It’s putting pressure on other roads in that area and causing difficulty for motorists.

‘‘They should complete one project and then begin another one. It’s causing congestion in central Dunedin.’’

"It’s causing congestion in central Dunedin.’’....Malcolm Budd.
It's all part of their plan, Malcolm. The DCC want to frustrate private motor vehicles so much, that they give up cars and take the bus.
Just wait until the hospital rebuild...Traffic will be backed to Green island.

I don't mind road closures if it to improve the road, but the worse aspect was that the detour ahead sign on Drivers Road did go anywhere, once you turned off onto Royal Terrace there were no more signs showing the route of the detour!

I have an idea. Lets not bother fixing roads, then there will be nothing to complain about.

Oh wait, yes there will.

Talk about a first world problem.

So there's some minor incovenience for a wee while - get over it.

Does Mr Von Pein ever read what he has said or written. What an astounding absurd comment to make: traffic is too heavy for us to manage so we have just ignored it and told it to go away.
I suppose we shouldn't be surprised, its the same DCC attitude that shut down the Octigan and wants to destroy Geiorge St.

I suggest looking at how bad congestion and traffic flows are around the country are, from Keri Keri to Invercargill. I had the displeasure of driving around Christchurch over January, road works and bad driving from locals.
