The Dunedin City Council is "considering options" for trees in Queens Gardens, after more branches fell yesterday.

It followed an incident in mid-December when a large branch from one of the elm trees fell, landing on a parked car.

Council park and recreation group manager Robert West said the council received reports of branches that had come down throughout Dunedin due to yesterday’s strong winds.

"This is consistent with the type of damage we would expect in these weather conditions," he said.

At Queens Gardens, a large branch narrowly missed hitting parked cars yesterday when it fell during the severe gusts.

Council staff were considering options for the future management of the trees, Mr West said.

"The focus will be to reduce the risk of further falling branches, while ensuring these trees continue to be enjoyed by the community in Queens Gardens."

DCC managing an area to minimise risks to vehicles whilst retaining the trees just means removing the car parks. Perfect result for DCC's anti car agenda.
