Giving employees an opportunity to be creative and take ownership of their work has elevated a small Dunedin company to the finals of the JRA Best Workplace Awards for the third consecutive year.

ADInstruments provides computer-based data acquisition systems for research and education, and employs about 40 highly skilled computer science specialists.

The company's employees completed a confidential survey about their workplace, and in return, the company received valuable feedback through online reports to identify both the positive aspects of the workplace, and those that needed work.

ADInstruments achieved some of the best survey results in New Zealand and the company has been nominated for the national award in the Best Small Workplace (20-49 employees) category.

It is the only company in the South Island to reach the 2011 finals.

Company co-founder and technical director Michael Macknight said he was proud of the nomination.

"The acknowledgement that our staff love working here - that's the real reward. Company global human resources manager Kelly Macknight said the company was privileged to have such highly skilled employees who wanted to work in Dunedin.

"The people here are as good as any around the world.

"We try to give them ownership of projects. They contribute ideas and they are able to be creative in their work."

Both said it would be nice to win the award, but it was not their main priority. Mr Macknight said the company had been a finalist in the competition for the past three years, and being consistently in the top three each year was proving to be just as fruitful for the company's image.

ADInstruments supplies equipment to some of the world's most high-profile government and private organisations, and academic institutions, including all 100 of the world's top 100 universities.

During the past 25 years, the company has expanded and opened 13 offices around the globe.

Clients include Roche Bioscience, Toyota, Shiseido, Pfizer, Lockheed Martin, Oxford University, Cambridge University, Harvard and Stanford.

ADInstruments will learn whether they will be third time lucky at a black tie awards ceremony in Auckland tomorrow night.
