Prices fall for stronger micron wool

Prices at the first South Island wool sale for the season in Christchurch yesterday were generally cheaper for stronger micron types.

The exception was poorer style wool that recovered somewhat from the previous sale, Dave Burridge, of PGG Wrightson Wool, said.

There was some new Chinese business, evident from the increased bidding activity for the finer micron styles, including a small offering of early season hogget wool, Mr Burridge said.

Roger Fuller, from Elders Primary Wool, said the offering of pre-lamb crossbred fleece was one of the best ''for some seasons''.

More than 50% of the offering was fleece, with the balance made up of second-shear, lambs and oddments and a small offering of mid-micron.

While prices eased by up to 2.5% for fleece and 3% for second-shear, prices were up by about 10% when compared with the same sale last year, Mr Fuller said.

With the currency up to 10% stronger than this time last year, it was an encouraging start to the season, he said.
