Columba College's Re-think Green team will represent the Otago region in the national final of the Young Enterprise Scheme awards in Wellington on November 3.

The team was last night named overall winner in the region for its idea of a biodegradable pen that, when the user was finished with it, could be planted in the ground with a seed in a seed cage.

Young Enterprise Scheme organiser Paul Allen said the scheme was a learning experience for senior secondary school pupils as they formed a company, became directors, developed products and services which they marketed and sold, keeping any profit - all within a single school year.

In Otago, nine high schools were represented this year by 20 pupil companies and 123 pupils.

The products ranged from cupcakes to the biodegradable pens, he said.

Other award winners were: Best oral presentation, About Time, Kaikorai Valley College; best business plan, Feel Good Cup Cakes, St Hilda's Collegiate School; best marketing plan, Re-think Green; most innovative product.

Optimus, Otago Girls High School; best annual report, Feel Good Cup Cakes; best financial performance, Re-think Green.
