A central Dunedin gym which has been in the same location for more than 40 years is set to make the move to Meridian Mall.

Yesterday, Les Mills Dunedin club manager Peter Lee announced the business would make the move to the mall after more than 40 years at its Dowling St site.

Mr Lee said the club was excited to make the move and planned to shift into the former H&J Smith and Arthur Barnett site on the lower ground floor of the mall in March next year.

In 2016, the Otago Daily Times reported the business was unhappy with a potential loss of car parks across from the building.

Mr Lee has previously said parking was "critical" for the club’s future at the Dowling St site.

Since then, the car park space had been sold to Ngai Tahu Property and the Accident Compensation Corporation agreed to lease the site for 20 years.

A building was expected to be completed in 2024.

"A big motivation for moving Les Mills is losing car parks across the road, so that really galvanised us to look for a new place," Mr Lee said yesterday.

Now gym members would be able to access more than 650 car parks in the mall, he said.

It had also worked out a solution with Meridian Mall management to allow access to its members between 5.30pm and 9pm.

However, the gym would confirm whether its hours would need to be adjusted closer to the opening date.
